| What is important to you? Millions of travelers come to the Napa Valley each year. Each has their own reasons for the journey-- tasting wine, enjoying the local restaurants, exploring the Napa Valley wineries . . . Still others come to celebrate a special event-- a birthday, or anniversary. Or even a honeymoon! And instead of staying at a stuffy or sterile hotel, they choose instead to stay at a Bed and Breakfast Inn. Whatever brings you to this beautiful place, we want you to have a great time. We visit the local Napa Valley and Sonoma wineries ourselves -- so we can pass on what it's like to taste wine there. We enjoy the local Napa restaurants, gourmet grocery stores, and—a personal favorite—the best places to have a picnic in the Napa Valley. We can also tell you about our favorite places to shop. Or taste cheese. Or . . . where the local chocolate shops are. Located in several of Napa's Historic Landmark houses, the Old World Inn comprises 4 main buildings: The original inn was built in 1906 by E. J. Doughty, a master craftsman responsible for some of the town's most beautiful homes and churches. It stayed in the Doughty family for years, before being converted into the "Napa Valley Bed and Breakfast" in 1979. It was officially licensed as a B&B in February of 1981-- the first year such licenses became available. It has central air conditioning for those hot Napa summer days, as well as fireplaces in each room for those romantic winter nights! The Old World Inn's main house (1556 Polk St) was built in 1874 and a large additiion was added in the late 1880s. The Queen Anne addition was the creation of one of Napa's premier architects: Luther Turton. Rumor has it that the building was remodeled (in the early 1900s) by the same E.W.Doughty that built the original inn a block away-- but we are still checking the accuracy of this claim. Just in back of the main house are two lovely Craftsman cottages, built around 1906. Both of these cottages and the main house have been restored to maintain their original architecture—with the addition of brand new plumbing, electrical, and all new heating/cooling (with thermostats in each guest room). Each home feels friendly and relaxed, with warm wooden moldings and hardwood, stone, and tile floors throughout. Rooms are sunny and inviting, a perfect place to rest at the end of a long day. Featherbeds, fireplaces, individual private baths, and private 2-person spa tubs are just a few of the many features waiting for overnight guests. As one of Napa’s first Bed and Breakfasts, the Old World Inn is known for two things: Food, and friendliness. Guests are treated to a gourmet’s repast, from freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies on check-in, to a 5:30 wine and cheese social hour, to devastating chocolate desserts when they return back to the Inn in the evening. And each morning begins with the smell of freshly ground coffee (or teas) and a two-course gourmet breakfast that will make your mouth water. From reservations at the perfect restaurant, to maps and special complimetary tastings at favorite wineries, the innkeepers have an uncanny ability to plan a perfect wine country stay for you. Guests often have such a wonderful time they don’t want to leave, and depart wanting to come back to this very special place. | Exploring and enjoying the Napa Valley is a passion for us!
